Pioneers Settle for Tie

Polonia 2 Richmond Pioneers 2 (HT 1-1)
(Pioneers: Johnston, Kushnir)

The Richmond Pioneers travelled to Tom Binnie Park for their first look at the new artificial turf field in Whalley. With a number of key players injured following last week's Penticton tournament, and another player (rhymes with 'Mitzy') missing due to, wait for it, 'lunch' commitments, the Pioneers had a slender roster for this encounter, and at the end of the game were content to escape with 2-2 draw.

Following a relatively even opening 30 minutes, Polonia opened the scoring with a nicely placed shot from 18 yards out. The Pioneers evened things up just two minutes before half time, when a cross from John Murphy from the left wing was glanced in from close range by the head of Ken Johnston.

The home team took the lead for the second time midway through the second half, when a low cross from the right wing was bundled into the net by a Polonia forward, the referee ignoring the Pioneers' plea's for a push in the process.

The Pioneers came close to equalizing following a nice sequence of passing when a Graham Mason shot struck the bar after being set up by Ken Johnston. However, the Pioneers did manage to tie it up when a Ken Swanston pass put Evgeni Kushnir through on goal, the Pioneer striker putting the ball past the keeper at the second attempt.

The Pioneers seemed to run out of steam in the closing minutes as Polonia looked like the team most likely to break the deadlock. To the relief of the tiring visitors, the final whistle blew for a 2-2 tie.
