Pioneers Hit for Six

Aldergrove 6 Richmond Pioneers 2

The Richmond Pioneers nine game unbeaten streak came to a crushing halt on Sunday as Aldergrove took full advantage of a lacklustre Pioneer performance, knocking six past the hapless visitors.

The Pioneers dug themselves a hole right from the start as Aldergrove scored two almost identical goals within 10 minutes, both capitalizing on defensive miscues.

The Pioneers finally woke up and started to create chances of their own, but it soon became obvious that this would be one of those days when nothing would go the visitor's way, as a myriad of good chances came to nothing. Things would get worse, as Aldergrove added a third before the half was over.

The Pioneers enjoyed most of the possession in the second half as they looked for a way to get back into the game. That chance came when they were awarded a penalty kick, which Evgeni Kushnir converted to reduce the deficit to 3-1.

The Pioneers were definitely on the ascendency, and looked certain to add a second when Ed Eviston got himself into a good position, only to blast his shot over the bar from close range.

That miss had increased significance when minutes later—against the run of play— a breaking Aldergrove forward beat Pioneer goalie Dave Valitis to the ball, and it was 4-1 Aldergrove.

Soon it was 5-1 Aldergrove, although the Pioneers pulled one back with the goal of the game, when Eviston scored with a powerful header, as he rose to meet a wonderful Ken Swanston cross from the right wing. Late in the game Aldergrove added number six to complete a humiliating day for the Pioneers.
