Pioneers Settle for Tie

Richmond Pioneers 1 Giant Panda 1

Following last week's embarrassing 6-2 loss to Aldergrove, the Richmond Pioneers were hoping to rebound by beating up on some poor defenseless panda, but the local derby opponents proved to be more resilient than a bamboo grove, and the Pioneers had to settle for a 1-1 draw.

Despite playing into the wind on this blustery wet morning, the Pioneers were creating good openings in the first half, but were let down by far too many offside calls, as the visitors played the offside trap effectively.

Giant Panda opened the scoring when a cross from the right wing found a Panda forward alone at the far post, his first time shot hitting the roof of the net.

Expecting to have the wind in their favor in the second half, the Pioneers found the weather gods had other ideas that included a torrential downpour.

The Pioneers were enjoying the bulk of the possession as they pushed forward looking for goals. Moving the ball around impressively, the chances started coming. The equalizer came when Ed Eviston mishit a speculative attempt on goal, the 'shot' turning into a deceptive pass to Jusuf Skrijelj, who jinked past the keeper to put the ball in the net and tie the game up.

What followed was a plethora of gilt-edged chances that fell to the Pioneers as they pushed for the winner. Ed Eviston, Stan Bogdanovich and Ken Kan were all guilty of woeful finishing, as chances went begging.

The Pioneer's profligacy was almost punished when Panda had a breakaway, forcing keeper Dave Valitis to make an important save and preserve the 1-1 scoreline.
