Pioneers Demolish Aldergrove

Aldergrove One 1 Richmond Pioneers 6

The Richmond Pioneers travelled to Aldergrove for an eagerly anticipated game against the Aldergrove #1 team, the last team to beat the Richmond Pioneers, back in January of this year. This time the outcome was very different, as the Pioneers turned in a fabulous team performance to crush Aldergrove 6-1.

From the opening whistle, the Pioneers came out blazing. After a couple of near misses, the Pioneers first goal came when a clearance from the Aldergrove keeper was beautifully struck full volley by Graham Mason from 25 yards out. A second goal soon followed when a pinpoint Denis Harvington cross from the left was nicely headed home by Ken Johnston.

Aldergrove had no answer to the Pioneer onslaught, and a third goal midway through the first half came when Eugene Kishmere found Johnston, who showed great coolness before placing his shot for his second goal of the game.

The game was essentially sealed when Stan Bogdanovich added a fourth Pioneer goal before the half time break.

The second half saw more chances open up for the Pioneers as Aldergrove pushed forward searching for a lifeline. The Pioneer defence was resolute, with left back Bob Heron particularly solid.

Stan Bogdanovich added the fifth and sixth goals for the Pioneers, with the Aldergrove goalkeeper looking increasingly vulnerable to low shots on the rain-slicked, but beautiful, surface.

Pioneer goalie Gary Bryne was denied a deserved shoutout when Aldergrove grabbed a late consolation goal from a corner kick to make it 6-1.

As the game wound down, Graham Mason suffered a broken wrist following a heavy tackle. An unfortunate end to what was a great team display from the Pioneers.

Mogul's Man of the Match: Hat-trick man Stan Bogdanovich, who played despite suffering the loss of his father. Condolences to Stan and his family.

Next week: Home game against Carib Islanders.
