Abysmal Pioneers Fit to be Tied

Richmond Pioneers 1 Tugs Classics 1. A sloppy, disjointed performance from a below-par Richmond Pioneers saw Sunday's game against Tugs Classic end in a disappointing 1-1 draw.

The first half was the worst performance by the Pioneers this season, as they struggled to string passes together or maintain any sustained pressure on the Tugs. Around the 20 minute mark, Tugs Classic took the lead when a speculative long range effort sneaked in under the crosssbar, eluding Pioneers' stand-in keeper Lorne Baumel. With both regular keepers unavailable, Baumel handled himself with aplomb, although the Tugs' defensive stance meant he was never really tested.

The second half saw the Pioneers enjoy a distinct territorial advantage, yet lacking the creativity to break down a stubborn, packed Tugs defence. The Pioneers did pull a goal back late in the game when Jim Langlands headed home a Ken Kan corner kick, but despite a frantic finale, the Pioneers were unable to conjure up a winner.

Next game. Up next is a local derby match against the Carib Islanders for the unofficial Richmond Cup, scheduled for Burnett School in Richmond.
