Pioneers Come Up Trumps Against Aces

Richmond Pioneers 7 Langley Aces 0

In the first game back following the mid-season break, the Richmond Pioneers easily beat Langley Aces 7-0. A last minute change by the schedule makers denied the Pioneers the chance to meet up with the highly touted New Westminster Regals, and instead found themselves facing a Langley team that was incapable of testing the Pioneers in any way.

It took just 5 minutes for the Pioneers to get on the scoresheet when Eugene Kishmere scored his sixth of the season, with Ken Swanston, Stan Bogdanovich and Ken Johnston all involved in the play. The Pioneers were two up when John Tsang burst through alone, and with no offside whistle to stop him, he finished efficiently. The Pioneers were enjoying an overwhelming amount of possession, and it was no surprise when Ken Johnston slotted the ball home to give the Pioneers a three goal lead at the half.

Unlike the last time these two teams met when Langley pulled two goals back in the second half, the Pioneers were not going to be so generous on this day. The goals started coming with ease, with Kishmere and Johnston each adding another goal. Following yet another Pioneer penalty kick miss, this time by Ken Kan, Ken Swanston scored his first of the season directly from the ensuing corner kick.

Ken Johnston would later complete his hat trick, bringing his tally to 18 for the season, to bring the match to a merciful end. The only setback was a calf injury to goalkeeper Gary Byrne, who is expected to be out for 3 to 4 weeks.

Man of the Match: Ken Johnston

Next week: Unless the schedule makers spring another surprise, the Pioneers are away to arch rival Stingers.
